IMAT 2027 Non-EU Seats: Quotas by University

Every year applicants pick an IMAT university on reputation and city, and only later discover how few places it had for their category. The numbers are published, in an annex to a ministerial decree, in a PDF that is hard to read and harder to compare.

Here it is as a table.

Two numbers matter and they are very different. Non-EU candidates resident abroad compete for one pool. EU candidates, and non-EU candidates already resident in Italy, compete for another. A university generous in one column can be nearly closed in the other.

Medicine and Surgery, taught in English

Sorted by places for non-EU candidates resident abroad, because if that is your category it is the only column that decides anything.

Total: 1,362 places for non-EU candidates abroad, and 2,430 for EU and Italy-resident candidates.

What the table shows that surprises people

One campus holds nearly a quarter of all non-EU places. Tor Vergata's Tirana campus in Albania has 320, against 20 at its Rome campus. If you are applying from outside the EU and have not considered it, you are ignoring the single largest door into Italian medicine in English.

UniCamillus in Rome has 225, more than the next four universities combined.

Some famous universities have very few. Milan has 15 non-EU places. La Sapienza has 13. Bari has 11. Reputation and access are not the same thing, and a strong applicant can miss a place at a university that only ever had a dozen.

The ratio flips. Neuromed has 10 non-EU places against 230 for EU candidates. Tor Vergata Tirana has 320 against zero. Politecnica delle Marche has more non-EU places than EU ones. Read your own column.

Florence is listed with zero non-EU places and is still pending accreditation, along with Neuromed at Pozzilli, Padua MedTech and Naples Federico II veterinary. Pending means it may change.

Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, taught in English

Far smaller, and worth knowing before you build a plan around them.

Veterinary Medicine (LM-42): 7 places for non-EU candidates abroad in total. Bologna, at Ozzano dell'Emilia, has 5. Naples Federico II has 2 and is pending accreditation. For EU and Italy-resident candidates there are 63.

Dentistry (LM-46): 11 places for non-EU candidates abroad. La Sapienza in Rome has 6, Siena has 5. For EU and Italy-resident candidates there are 49.

Seven places nationally for non-EU veterinary applicants is not a course to plan a move around without a second option.

The dates, from the same decree

• Registration opens 26 August 2026
• Registration closes 9 September 2026 at 15:00 (GMT+2), and the decree describes that deadline as final
• The exam is sat on 29 September 2026, starting at 13:30 Italian time, with foreign venues adjusted to local time zones

Non-EU candidates resident abroad compete only in the local ranking of the university where they filed their pre-enrolment through Universitaly. Choosing a university is therefore not a preference. It decides which pool you are in.

The exam itself

Sixty questions with five options, in 100 minutes: 4 on reading and general knowledge, 5 on logical reasoning, 23 biology, 15 chemistry, 13 physics and mathematics.

Biology alone is more than a third of the paper. Anyone dividing revision evenly across subjects is misallocating their strongest weeks.

Where these numbers come from

All of it is from Decreto Ministeriale n. 1005, for academic year 2026-27, and its annexes: Tabella B for the places, Tabella A for the test venues, Allegato A for the syllabus. It is a public act, which is why we can reproduce it here.

We have transcribed it carefully and the column totals reconcile with the decree's own totals. Even so, check the original before making a decision that depends on a single number, and watch for later amendments. A decree can be modified, and the version on the ministry's site is the one that counts.
