European integration progressed through major historic treaties: - 1951 Treaty of Paris: Established the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). - 1957 Treaty of Rome: Established the European Economic Community (EEC / CEE) and Euratom. - 1992 Maastricht Treaty: Formally established the European Union (EU), created the 3-pillar structure, and set economic convergence criteria for the Euro currency. - 1997 Amsterdam & 2001 Nice Treaties: Expanded EU competence and voting structures. - 2007 Treaty of Lisbon: Modernized current EU institutional framework.
EU Institutions: - European Parliament: The ONLY EU institution directly elected by the citizens of member states every 5 years. - European Commission: The executive arm proposing legislation and managing day-to-day policies. - Council of the European Union & European Council: Represent national governments and heads of state.
Worked example
The 1992 Maastricht Treaty formally created the European Union and paved the way for the single currency (Euro). The European Parliament is directly elected by EU citizens.
