A lever question is solved using torque balance. The turning effect depends on force multiplied by distance from the pivot. When one side increases, the other side must adjust.
Students often multiply the wrong values because they forget that distance matters as much as force.
Worked example
A 20 N force acts 5 meters from a pivot. The other side has a 2 meter arm. Using F1d1=F2d2, 20×5=F2×2, so F2=50 N.
1.A longer lever arm requires less force for the same torque.
2.Lever balance ignores the distance from the pivot.
3.Balanced levers have equal clockwise and counterclockwise torque.
