Quadratic discriminant
For a≠0: positive gives two distinct real roots; zero gives one repeated root.

Before expanding an expression, ask whether factoring or completing the square makes the target clearer. Quadratics link three representations: coefficients, roots and graph. For ax²+bx+c, the discriminant b²−4 ac determines the number of distinct real roots when a≠0. Completing the square locates a turning point. A function composition means applying the inner function first; its domain must keep every intermediate operation defined.

Find the minimum of f(x) = x² − 6x + 11 and decide how many real zeros it has.
Step 1 — expose the square. Since (x − 3)² = x² − 6x + 9, add the remaining 2: f(x) = (x − 3)² + 2.
Step 2 — use a bound. A real square is at least zero, so f(x) ≥ 2. Equality occurs at x = 3. The minimum value is therefore 2, at the point (3, 2). This is a value-and-location answer, not simply “3”.
Step 3 — connect the algebra to the graph. The parabola opens upwards and its vertex is above the x-axis. It cannot cross y = 0, so there are no real zeros. Independently, the discriminant is 36 − 44 = −8, confirming that conclusion.
For a separate domain example, let g(x) = 1/(x − 1). Then g(x²) = 1/(x² − 1). The denominator is zero at x = 1 or x = −1, so both inputs must be excluded. Composition checks the domain of the inner output, not only the original input.
