Organic chemistry investigates carbon-based compounds and functional groups.

Alcohols: R-OH (hydroxyl group). Primary alcohols oxidize to aldehydes then carboxylic acids.
Aldehydes & Ketones: R-CHO (terminal carbonyl) and R-CO-R (internal carbonyl).
Carboxylic Acids: R-COOH (carboxyl group). React with alcohols to form esters.
Esters & Amides: R-COO-R' (ester linkage) and R-CONH2 (peptide/amide linkage).

Locate the longest continuous carbon chain containing the principal functional group.
Number the carbon backbone from the end closest to the highest priority group.
Identify all substituents and list them alphabetically with position numbers.
