I sillogismi categoriali utilizzano i quantificatori universali ("Tutti", "Nessuno") ed esistenziali ("Alcuni", "Almeno uno").
Per verificare se una conclusione è corretta, rappresenta le premesse con i diagrammi di Euler-Venn. "Tutti gli A sono B" significa che l'insieme A è interamente racchiuso nell'insieme B. "Nessun A è B" indica che gli insiemi A e B non si intersecano. Una conclusione è valida solo se risulta vera in QUALSIASI diagramma compatibile con le premesse.
Worked example
Premessa 1: Tutti i farmaci sono composti chimici. Premessa 2: Alcuni composti chimici sono tossici. Conclusione corretta: Alcuni composti chimici sono farmaci. (Non si può invece dedurre che tutti i farmaci siano tossici).
1.Dalle premesse 'Tutti i cani sono mammiferi' e 'Tutti i mammiferi sono vertebrati' segue necessariamente che tutti i cani sono vertebrati.
2.Dalle premesse 'Alcuni medici sono chirurghi' e 'Alcuni chirurghi sono pianisti' segue necessariamente che alcuni medici sono pianisti.
3.La negazione logica della frase 'Tutti gli studenti hanno superato l'esame' è 'Nessuno studente ha superato l'esame'.
