Building and sustaining competitive advantage

A cost leader is the lowest-cost producer in its industry. This does not mean the cheapest price — a cost leader chooses how to deploy its cost advantage: - Price at or near the market average → earn higher margins than rivals. - Price below rivals → capture market share they cannot profitably match.

How cost advantage is built:

Economies of scale: as output volume rises, fixed costs are spread across more units — cost per unit falls. A firm producing 10 million units per year has radically lower unit costs than one producing 100,000.

Learning (experience) curve: cumulative production experience reduces unit cost systematically. Each time cumulative output doubles, unit cost typically falls by 15–25% (the exact percentage varies by industry). First-movers who build volume early accumulate a cost advantage rivals cannot easily close.

Process efficiency: lean operations, minimal waste, tight procurement, and rigorous cost control across every activity.

Scale in procurement: high-volume buyers negotiate lower input prices from suppliers.

Cost leadership requires disciplined, company-wide commitment — a single expensive habit in one part of the value chain can erode the advantage.
