Part 1 of 1
Ratios express relative proportions between quantities. If the ratio of males to females is 3 : 2, the total number of parts is 3 + 2 = 5.
The male fraction of the total is 3/5 (60%), and the female fraction is 2/5 (40%). To find actual quantities, multiply the total group size by each fraction.
Worked example
Group of 150 students has ratio 4 : 1 of Domestic to International. Total parts = 5. Domestic = 150 * (4/5) = 120 students. International = 150 * (1/5) = 30 students.
1.If the ratio of A to B is 1 : 3, then A represents 25% of the total combined amount.
2.A ratio of 2 : 3 means that quantity A is equal to 2/3 of the total amount.
3.Multiplying both numbers in a ratio by the same positive constant preserves the ratio proportion.
