When presented with a number sequence, immediately write down the differences between consecutive terms. If the differences are constant, the sequence is arithmetic.
If the first differences are not constant but increase steadily, calculate the second differences (differences between differences). A constant second difference indicates a quadratic sequence rule.
Worked example
Sequence: 4, 7, 12, 19, 28. First differences: +3, +5, +7, +9. Second differences: +2, +2, +2 (constant). Next difference is +11, so next term is 28 + 11 = 39.
For the exam
1.In the sequence 5, 11, 17, 23, the constant difference between consecutive terms is 6.
2.If second differences are constant, the sequence rule is linear.
3.Writing out differences on scratch paper is the recommended first step for unknown number series.
