Part 1 of 1
Linear sequencing problems involve placing entities in a single line (1st to 5th, Monday to Friday, top to bottom). Write numbers 1 through N on scratch paper to represent slots.
Translate verbal constraints into shorthand symbols. For example, 'A is before B' becomes A < B. 'A is next to B' becomes (AB) or (BA). 'Two items separate A and B' becomes A _ _ B.
Worked example
Five runners (P, Q, R, S, T) finish a race. P finishes before Q. R finishes 2nd. S finishes immediately after P. T finishes last (5th). Since T is 5th and R is 2nd, P and S must be 1st and 3rd... wait, S is immediately after P, so P is 1st, S is 3rd, Q is 4th. Order: P, R, S, Q, T.
For the exam
1.If A is immediately before B, and B is before C, then A must be before C.
2.The constraint 'Exactly two people stand between X and Y' implies that X and Y occupy positions that differ by 2.
3.Fixed anchor positions (e.g. 'T is 5th') should be written in your diagram first.
