Part 1 of 4
Do not read every word with equal intensity on your first pass. Spend 45 seconds skimming the passage to build a mental map of its structure.
Read the first paragraph completely, the first sentence of each middle paragraph, and the concluding paragraph. This reveals the central thesis and tells you where specific topics are discussed.
Worked example
A 400-word passage on central bank interest rates: Paragraph 1 introduces rate hikes; Paragraph 2 discusses housing impact; Paragraph 3 covers employment effects. Skimming identifies where to look for housing questions.
1.Skimming should focus on building a structural map of the passage rather than memorizing small details.
2.The first sentence of a paragraph frequently acts as a topic sentence summarizing that paragraph's main point.
3.You must read every word of a passage at equal slow speed before looking at any questions.

Why is this the correct answer?
Eliminate any option that contradicts something stated directly in the lesson, then check which one actually follows from the rule you just learned. Tell me which option confused you and I'll point to the exact line.
Exam strategy
If you can explain why the wrong answers are wrong, you know the topic. Remembering the right one only gets you halfway.
