Part 1 of 1
When asked for the meaning of a word in line X, do not choose the option that matches your first memory of the word. Instead, go to line X, cover the options, and substitute a temporary replacement word that preserves sentence meaning.
Then compare your replacement word against the five choices. Select the choice closest in meaning to your replacement in that specific sentence context.
Worked example
Text: 'The bank held substantial reserves to cushion against economic shocks.' Target word: 'cushion'. Replacement: 'protect' or 'mitigate'. Correct choice: Protect (not comfortable pillow).
1.The correct meaning of a word in a passage is always its primary dictionary definition.
2.Substituting candidate options into the original sentence tests whether they preserve meaning and grammar.
3.Context substitution should be performed before evaluating distractor options.
