In the CISIA reading syllabus, an 'inference' differs fundamentally from everyday usage. In colloquial conversation, an inference is an educated guess. On the CEnT-S, an inference is an unstated proposition that is logically necessitated by the statements in the text. If a statement requires external plausibility or unstated assumptions to be true, it is classified as speculation and must be rejected.
Look closely at logical connectors and quantifiers: - If the text states 'All compounds possessing functional group X exhibit antimicrobial activity,' and 'Molecule M possesses functional group X,' it is a valid inference that Molecule M exhibits antimicrobial activity. - However, if the text states 'Most compounds possessing functional group X exhibit antimicrobial activity,' inferring that Molecule M is antimicrobial is invalid (it is merely probable, not certain). Always identify the exact sentence in the passage that logically forces the inference to hold true.
Formal Inference
An unstated proposition that is 100% logically necessitated by the text.
Speculation Trap
An option that sounds plausible in the real world but is not logically guaranteed by the text.
Quantifier Sensitivity
Distinguish 'all' from 'most' or 'some'; universal premises allow definitive deductions.
Evidentiary Anchor
Every valid inference must cite a specific sentence or set of coordinating clauses.

1.On the CEnT-S exam, an inference can be considered correct if it is highly probable in everyday life, even if not strictly proven by the passage.
2.If a passage uses the word 'some', you cannot validly infer that a property applies universally to 'all' members of that group.
