Parte 1 di 1
Vocabulary questions on the CEnT-S (e.g., 'The word X in paragraph Y most nearly means...') do not reward rote dictionary memorization. They evaluate whether you can deduce the exact shade of meaning required by the surrounding syntax and argument.
Academic English relies heavily on polysemous words—words with multiple meanings depending on domain: - 'Labile' in colloquial English might suggest emotionally unstable; in biochemistry and soil science, it means chemically unstable or easily degraded. - 'Quiescent' in daily conversation might mean peaceful; in neurobiology, it describes an excitable cell resting below its firing threshold. - 'Recalcitrant' colloquially means obstinate or uncooperative; in environmental chemistry, it denotes polymer bonds that resist enzymatic breakdown.
Always use the 'Substitution Test': replace the target word with each answer choice in the original sentence. Discard any option that creates scientific nonsense or alters the author's logical trajectory.
Polysemy
Words possessing distinct meanings across colloquial, scientific, and economic contexts.
Substitution Test
Placing candidate options directly into the original sentence to test syntactic and semantic fit.
Contextual Clues
Look for nearby contrast markers ('whereas', 'however') or definitions set off by dashes.
Domain Precision
Select the option that matches the specific scientific or economic register of the text.
Esempio svolto
1.In vocabulary-in-context questions, you should always choose the most common colloquial definition of the word.
2.The Substitution Test involves replacing the target word in the sentence with each candidate answer to verify logical coherence.
3.In the worked example, 'chemically resistant to decomposition' is correct because it fits the context of microbial degradation of polymers.
