Parte 1 di 1
In scientific graphs, the independent variable is conventionally plotted on the horizontal x-axis and the dependent variable on the vertical y-axis. The slope of a line segment Δ y / Δ x represents the average rate of change over that interval.
Scatter plots reveal relationships between paired variables. If points trend upward from left to right, correlation is positive; if downward, negative; if scattered with no direction, correlation is zero. Correlation does not imply causation.
Independent Variable
Horizontal x-axis
Controlled parameter (time, temp, conc)
Dependent Variable
Vertical y-axis
Measured response (yield, rate, pressure)
Slope = Rate of Change
Δ y / Δ x
Steeper slope indicates faster rate of change
Correlation vs Causation
Statistical association does not prove direct causation
Confounding factors must be controlled
Esempio svolto
1.A horizontal line on a distance-time graph indicates that the object is stationary.
2.A strong positive correlation between two variables proves that one variable causes the other.
