Average rate
For speed use total distance divided by total travel time.

A rate compares an amount with time or another exposure. Keep the denominator visible. Consecutive percentage changes multiply factors; a discount and matching percentage increase generally do not cancel. For a cost comparison, distinguish fixed charges from per-unit charges. Test whether the requested result is a total, a change or an average.

Plan A costs £8 plus £2 per visit; plan B costs £14 plus £1 per visit. When is B cheaper?
Step 1 — define the quantity. Let v be the number of visits, a nonnegative integer. The totals are A = 8 + 2v and B = 14 + v, in pounds.
Step 2 — find equality. Set 8 + 2v = 14 + v, so v = 6. At six visits, each plan costs £20. Equality is not a strict saving.
Step 3 — answer the actual question. B < A means 14 + v < 8 + 2v, so v > 6. Since visits are whole numbers, the first cheaper use of B is seven visits. At seven, A costs £22 and B £21; at five, A costs £18 and B £19.
The graph's vertical intercepts show fixed fees and its gradients show cost per visit. Compare total cost, not only the cheaper fee or the cheaper per-visit rate.
