CEnT-S Biology from Zero: A Study Plan
A starting plan for maths and commerce students, organised around the official biology syllabus with a realistic first-pass study budget.
If you studied maths or commerce and stopped biology earlier at school, begin with a syllabus checklist rather than a large textbook read from cover to cover. The official CISIA biology syllabus defines the scope. Your task is to identify what is unfamiliar and then test whether you can use it in a question.
The official topic headings: your checklist
Mark each heading as new, partly familiar or ready for practice. These are CISIA's five biology headings; the prompts underneath are our study checks.
- Biological molecules. Can you connect a molecule's structure with what it does?
- Cell biology. Can you explain how cell components cooperate, rather than only label a diagram?
- Cell cycle, cell division, inheritance. Can you follow genetic information and distinguish the outcomes of different divisions?
- Elements of plant biology and ecology. Can you connect plant processes to relationships within an ecosystem?
- Elements of animal anatomy and physiology. Can you explain how tissues and organ systems support an animal's functions?
Use the detailed bullets under each heading on CISIA's page to check completeness. This short checklist is a way to organise study, not a replacement for the official syllabus.
A suggested order and first-pass time budget
This is an initial 25–35 hours of focused study and practice. It is our estimate for scheduling, not an externally measured preparation requirement. If a checkpoint is still difficult, extend that stage rather than moving on because the hours have passed.
| Stage | Suggested hours | What to produce before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| Molecules | 4–5 | A comparison sheet explaining the roles of the main molecule groups. |
| Cells | 5–6 | A diagram you can explain aloud from memory, including how its parts work together. |
| Division and inheritance | 6–8 | A process map and worked inheritance problems, with a reason for every step. |
| Plants and ecology | 4–6 | An energy-flow diagram and examples of interactions between organisms. |
| Animal anatomy and physiology | 4–6 | A structure-and-function summary for each system in the syllabus. |
| Mixed review | 2–4 | An error log distinguishing missing knowledge from misread questions. |
Do not spend the entire budget making notes. After a short learning session, close the material and explain one process. Then answer questions and record why the incorrect options fail. If English terminology is unfamiliar, keep a small glossary with a definition and an example, rather than translating long paragraphs word for word.
Free resources and our existing lessons
For free background explanations, use Khan Academy. Use CISIA's sample material to inspect the way an admission-test question is presented. Neither finishing a video playlist nor recognising a sample answer proves readiness for an unseen sitting.
Our existing lessons provide starting points in the order above:
- Biological molecules and enzymes.
- Cell biology and genetics.
- Molecular genetics and heredity.
- Human physiology, tissues and endocrine systems.
These links identify existing lessons, some of which require course access. They are not a claim that this list covers every official biology bullet. In particular, keep the plant and ecology heading in your study plan even though there is no dedicated lesson for it in this list. Compare what you have studied with CISIA's full checklist.
How to decide whether your plan is working
Try explaining an unfamiliar question before looking at its answer. If you can only recognise the correct option after seeing it, return to the concept. Once untimed work is stable, practise a biology block under its official 20-minute limit and review the errors afterwards.
Use our sample questions for every section for orientation. Before allocating most of your preparation time to one subject, check which sections your university counts.
